Emulation Thread

ITT: Tell us what you're emulating and discuss emulation.

A good site to find games to emulate.

These are the best (in my opinion) PS1 and PS2 emulators.
PS1: (Make sure to up the quality in the enhancement settings.)

I'm currently playing through the Legacy of Kain series. I recently finished Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and it's such a good game. The soundtrack, level design, gameplay, everything is great. The writing really blew me away, I loved hearing Kain speak. His lines are like straight out of some old gothic horror novel.
I'm playing Soul Reaver now. I don't think it's as good but I'm still enjoying my time with it. Raziel is a bit too angsty for me at times. The game still has a cool neo-gothic vibe and the music and writing holds up.

22/agdg/ - Amateur Game Development General #1

This is a general for discussing all matters pertaining to amateur game development, including devblogging, seeking advice, posting resources, being an idea guy, etc.
Not sure if there's enough of a userbase here to get something so niche off the ground, but I figured I'd see what happens. Maybe 22chan will have a decent library of original games someday. We've already got Steve's Garden, after all. I'll be posting about my current project shortly, and anyone who is working on something is encouraged to do the same.

"You had to be there"

I was thinking about how games age today and these five words are an easy way to sum up the concept. Basically, this argument is sometimes used to object to someone's opinion that a particular game is not as good as it is often praised to be. The game in question is normally old and was highly influential at the time of its release. The crux of the argument is that the person did not play the game at the time of its release when it was still new and impressive for its time, therefore said person wouldn't be able to fully appreciate it and thus, their opinion sucks. The question is: is this really a valid argument? Does a game "not hold up" simply because it's old and has been outdone, or is it because it just inherently was not as great as it is often made out to be?

A good example would be The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: possibly the most highly praised game of all time. Of course, with all that hype behind it, it would be expected that someone playing the game today would feel a little underwhelmed by the experience. Certain aspects that would've have been big news at the time, such as Hyrule Field, have undoubtedly aged poorly. This person would probably already have a basic outline of what to expect purely from being in "gaming circles", such as already knowing the real identity of Sheik. Of course, the core gameplay is still something that he would be experiencing for the first time. Now let's say he beats game and, for arguments sake, let's say he even played the game on original hardware. If this person were to say he thought the game was "pretty good", could we pin that lousy reception to the circumstance and time in which he played the game, or could we say that the game simply was not good enough to knock his socks off? Obviously, there are many things that influence one's enjoyment with a game such as their taste and such, but certain corners must be cut and points ignored in this hypothetical scenario.

For me personally, I don't think Half-Life 2 is all that good. I found it be alright, in fact I certainly enjoyed parts of it, but far from "The best PC game evah made". Now, I might think to myself that maybe I missed out on the "true" experience because I played it many years after the fact, but, at the same time, I've enjoyed games from around the same time and even older more so than I did Half-Life 2. This is what makes me think that games don't "age" worse than others because their tech is outdated, but rather because their design is worse (for the most part).

So, what do you think? How do you believe games age? Are there games that are relevant now that you think will be looked back on as "You had to be there" games? Do you think your favourites will still "hold up" even 10, 20 or even 30 years from now?
Just to clarify, I'm not referring to games that very obviously would require you to have played them at the time of their prime, such as online games that have shut down or simply don't have the community they used to or games that require certain hardware that will be difficult to find in due time. Certainly, there is still a discussion to be had about game preservation in these situations, though.
/x/-teir vidya

Thread theme's kinda obvious, (spoopy games, weird shit, horror, ect) but it can also expand to horror elements in games you wouldnt exactly expect to see it in. Like say in pokemon red and blue, How team rocket slaughtered all the pokemon in lavander town. leaving you to even fight against a vengeful spirit. The creepy music didnt help make it any less spookyer. Or in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
There's a boss fight where you see all the the ghosts of the people you killed in game (all of them) and they even yell at you about how you killed them! Shoot a guy in the head, he'll cry out and say
>"my head!"
as he attempts to strangle you. also what's funny is if you shoot a guy in the crotch, he'll say how you "took his manhood" away from him.

The Current Era of Gaming

What do you think about the current state of vidya? Is our time a bad time for vidya or is it a good one? Share your thoughts.
I think this era is simultaneously the best and, possibly, the worst.

Vidya has never been more accessible than today. The internets allow easy access to numerous titles through programs like Steam/GOG and of course there's always good old piracy. Emulation opens the door to an endless backlog of old vidya at no expense at all. In a matter of minutes I can experience some obscure Japanese Playstation game from the comfort of my living room. There are tons of free-to-play games out there. Online games make playing with friends easy and even allow for making new friends through the game. This is the best time for experiencing vidya. 10-15 years ago our situation was a distant dream and I think a lot of people take this for granted.

Indeed, our tech is impressive. Video games keep evolving, the latest game one-upping the last. Is this necessarily a good thing? It's great what games can accomplish but often it feels unnecessary. Take the cinema in Red Read Redemption. You can pay to watch a short movie over the shoulder of your character. Does this really add any value to the gameplay or is just there because it's cool? Sometimes it seems our technical advancements just result in bloat. Even more so I get the feeling that as video games try to impress you with all of their cool features and grandeur, somewhere along the line those things took precedence over artistic integrity.
Video games have become more than simple entertainment. Reality seeps more and more into games. Vidya has become too involved in politics and social justice. Like how the God of War development team is making figures from Norse mythology black. It just doesn't make sense. It's like setting a game in Africa and populating entire towns with white people. This gets in the way of genuine, good storytelling because it's just done to please a certain crowd. Don't even get me started on Amnesia: Rebirth.
Everyone has to be pleased. The general consensus seems that video games must include everyone. This has led to dumbed down gameplay in many titles. Of course, this depends on the game but I believe most big-company games will adopt this method. A good example is the Elder Scrolls series. Even though I love Oblivion it's obvious every new entry in the series is more watered down than the first.
Vidya is becoming more of an industry every day. Don't get me wrong, it's always been an industry but lately it seems that getting the product bought is more important than its quality. Remember when Blizzard announced their new Diablo game would be mobile only? I believe that was just for the money. Not everyone has a gaming PC but everyone has a smartphone. Mobile games just make more money. I also believe this is the reason for all the remakes and reboots we're getting. Nothing milks the money cow like safe, comfy nostalgia.
This all ties in to what I said earlier, because if a game is accessible to a wider audience it means more of it will be bought. Of course all the micro-transactions and in-game purchases are worrisome, too. It seems developers want you to spend as much time and money on their game as possible. Sometimes it even feels like video games are designed to provide escape and waste time rather than to be fun. Years ago, video games were mostly developed by people who liked them. People who played games themselves, who created games because they had passion for them. I think as the industry-factor rises it becomes more of just a job.

So, in my opinion today is the best time to experience vidya and enjoy various titles, but a dark time for the development and artistic freedom of vidya.

Talk About What Your Currently Playing

ITT:Talk about your what your currently doing gaming wise. Please post screenshots of the game you are talking about for context. Feel free to talk about what you think about the story.
I am currently playing CrossCode which is an action RPG. It is pretty interesting so far. The combat is fun and the pixel art is very cool looking to me pic related. What is odd to me is that the developers seem to love diversity and have npcs of all different races. It hasn't affected the quality of the game so far but it is obvious what the developers politics are. Currently, I am doing a dungeon that involves a puzzle. I haven't had the energy to do it but I will definitely complete it to talk about it in this thread.

Stuff /vg/ misses

I miss game manuals. You know, like when you buy a game and you see a little booklet in the corner. If you dont know how to play a game, they explain it, and they even go as far as to add goodies like a mini comic book, or even make the manual some meta thing, like if it was a vital part of the story! I miss when games where just plug in and play, where it was the full game without having to wait a day or two to update, or worse! i hate when i play the master chief collection and the whole damn game crashes because you lost connection to wifi even though it's on single player mode. Old game servers are still running for multi-player (like ps2 starwars battlefront) but its like a damn ghost town and its so sad! it would be cool to play metal gear solid PW co-op and have people online but i honestly doubt it'll happen. Games like halo CE used to be by the people, and for the people made by geeks and for geeks who just wanted to have fun and everything changed to where you have to grind for gear, and compete in a more formal manner instead of bullshitting like those old xbox live COD lobbies. Also its now more toxic, like political or plain labrat teir propaganda instead of a nice escape. (somethimes made to be addictive on purpose) Like in the last of us II where you are forced to shoot a dog, and then everyone in the game hates you for doing it, making you feel ashamed although you literally had no choice to do it.
I also miss those cheat codes like getting more in game money or god mode and you either have to pay close attention to discover it (writing tons of codes down on a single sheet of paper lol) or go online or buy a book to get some

Things normies say about vidya that pisses you off

>the graphics are too bad, I can't play this game

Why are graphics so important? It's like saying you won't get into a car because the paint on it is ugly. It's sad to think about how many good games there are out there that most people won't play simply because the graphics aren't up to their standards. I see graphics more as an artistic choice and "bad" graphics are just the artistry of that era of gaming. If anything, modern hyper-realistic graphics look terrible. They give me a serious case of uncanny valley and they'll become obsolete in a few years when they no longer meet the then-current standards. Meanwhile, games like Gungrave or God of War III still look good today, many years after release, because they focused on an artistic look over a realistic one.
R: 38 / I: 4

Alright so this thread is for discussing all things metal gear related. Also i plan to play the metal gear series, in chronological order, and discuss them as i play. Haven't played this game series before and i think it'll be interesting.

Recommendation Thread

Post games (and other similar forms of amusement) that you want to recommend to other Anons. I will start.

Halo Custom Edition (Halo CE) is a official expansion for the PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved (Halo PC). What makes Halo CE different from Halo PC is that players can create custom levels (and weapons, etc.) for the game. Pls note that you need Halo PC product key to install it (but you can just search YouTube for Halo PC keygen and copy the key from the video). You don't need to have the CD, if you install the patch.

You can get Halo CE here:
You also need the official V1.0.10 patch:
You will probably also want to install the Halo Anti-Cheat (HAC2). It's not required but it makes your life easier. It enables things like automatic map downloads when joining a server. You can download it here:
To install it, just copy the "loader.dll" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\controls" folder.
If you want to create custom levels and other content, you will also need the Halo Editing Kit (HEK):
AND the bug-free tags:

To play custom single player maps, create a new shortcut for "haloce.exe" and add "-devmode -console" as launch options (without quotes). (I think the Halo CE installer adds Halo Custom Edition Developer Mode in your start menu by default.) Use that shortcut to launch the game. Then you need to open the console (press the key under ESC), and type "map_name map_name_goes_here" (without quotes and the file extension) and press ENTER.

Arena Shooter Thread

QuakeJS — play Quake 3 in your browser again! ( — find QW lobbies (

Sorry if the upper links are only focused on Quake, they're just what I could think of at the time. Add more if you can.

Anyways, I don't see this genre upon itself get talked about much in wider gamer circles, in part due to the kind of COD-shooter or milsim that's more popular these days, or just general indifference. I'd like to change that with this thread. Post Arena shooters, retro or modern, that impress, inspire, or just warm you.

Pocket Monsters

What's your personal favorite pokemon game and why? Personally. I can't quite decide between Emerald and Platinum. Do any of you nigs remember these old Petz games? Any funny/comfy stories? Apparently these games are turning out to be surprisingly complex, so much so that we still don't know what all is in them even though they're from the 90s. Just last year it was discovered that each pet has a favorite color. Kinda spooky. I fully believe it, since it's the only pet sim I've ever played where each individual pet had a distinct and believable personality. It's almost feels like Ubisoft trapped real cats inside your computer using black magic or something.
